Manga Title: Niehime to Kemono no Ou
Author: Tomofuji Yuu
First Impression: 5/5 Stars!
I was scrolling Tumblr one day and I saw a screencap from this manga and I already knew this was going to be a good one. I have always enjoyed fairytale retellings or fairytales told in different media as opposed the traditional short story form.
Niehime to Kemono no Ou is very similar and I believed based off of Beauty and the Beast, if the beauty was a girl meant as to be the sacrifice and meal to the beast, or the king of the Underworld.
Saliphe (but typically called Sali) is a girl chosen as the 99th sacrifice to be fed to the king of the underworld. Sali is rather funny and not scared of the demon king or his servants as the previous sacrifice. She’s a witty and could be considered fresh character which I think is awesome. It is later revealed that Sali is not scared of the king of the underworld or being eaten for she has seen scarier.
We are then showed a flashback of her as a child discovering her name means sacrifice or offering. Her “parents” are talking about how the next sacrifice will come from their village, but they got a substitute child just in case. Now I’m not sure whether or not this implies Sali is not their child, but that is what I believe. Tomofuji really draws the parents as being scary and truthfully I could see how the parents were more of the monsters than the king of the underworld or the demons are.
The king and Sali start developing a friendship and we see in the first chapter the king taking in Sali’s desires such as seeing flowers. Then, the night for the sacrifice to happen occurs and Sali is lead into the chamber where she is to be eaten. Sali is then, attacked by a lizard-like demon, but saved by a young man in a cloak.
Sali knows that the boy in the cloak is the king. His backstory is that he has human blood and on the night of when the sacrifices happen he reverts into his human form and cuts his own arm to make it appear a human has been slain. Sali tells the king to eat her for she has nobody to go home to and the king looks very sad when she says that. It is then shown that the king has decided to make Sali his consort (or bride in a sense) and plans to have her stay by his side.
Overall this seems to be a very cute shoujo manga and I’m a sucker for Beauty and the Beast retellings and expect more reviews on this manga as it progresses
